What makes this a database, not a directory
A directory lists ships. This tracks them. Positions come from AIS (the transponder signal every large vessel broadcasts), collected from satellite and shore receivers, so a ship page shows where the vessel is now, not where a schedule says it should be.
Ship specifications, gross tonnage, passenger capacity, decks and year built come from the operators. Port call history is derived from the positions themselves, so it reflects where a ship has actually been, which is why it can differ from a published itinerary.
