Port of Liverpool

Liverpool City Council owns and operates the City of Liverpool Cruise Terminal. Peel Ports lists cruise berths and passenger facilities at Liverpool, within an hour's drive of two major international airports.

Mooring and wind rules at the terminal

The berthing guidelines say a ship longer than 258 metres overall may need moorings run to the mooring dolphins north of the terminal pontoons. In sustained winds above 35 knots or gusts above 40 knots from north-west through north to south, or sustained winds above 45 knots from any direction, the ship's master, with the pilot and the council's terminal manager, should assess conditions and halt passenger operations if it is unsafe to continue.

Hailing a black cab

The council lists hackney taxi stands at Lime Street Station, Lord Nelson Street, Old Hall Street, Ranelagh Street and Water Street. It also lists Albert Dock, Duke Street (evening only), North John Street and Whitechapel. The council's page does not say which stand is nearest the cruise terminal, and says the locations on it are under review, so check it before you rely on a rank.

Fares follow the council's rates, operative from 31 March 2025. The day rate applies to journeys beginning after 06:00 and ending before 21:00, and starts at £3.40 for the first 300 yards, then adds 20p for each further 165 yards or less. The night rate applies to journeys beginning after 21:00 and ending before 06:00, and starts at £4.25. The peak rate applies from 19:00 Friday to 07:00 Saturday and from 19:00 Saturday to 08:00 Sunday, plus Easter Sunday and bank holidays, and starts at £4.75. The extra rate applies to journeys beginning after 18:00 on 24 December until 06:00 on 27 December, and after 18:00 on 31 December until 06:00 on 2 January. It starts at £5.10.

The meter should always be engaged for journeys within Liverpool or ending less than 4 miles beyond its boundary. For a journey ending 4 miles or more beyond the nearest boundary, the driver is not obliged to accept the hiring. If the driver does, you can agree a fare or rate with the driver before the journey starts. Otherwise the meter applies, and the driver may ask for an estimated fare up front. Only tolls, a £40 charge for cleaning the inside of the vehicle and a £10 charge for soiling the outside may be added to the fare. A driver may not charge extra for paying by card or other electronic means.

Out to John Lennon Airport

Liverpool John Lennon Airport sits just over 7 miles south-east of the city centre. Visit Liverpool says the airport is about 20 minutes from the city centre, and Manchester Airport 45 minutes. It adds that Manchester Airport has direct rail connections to Liverpool Lime Street.

Lime Street and Merseyrail

Visit Liverpool describes Lime Street as the main-line terminal in the heart of the city centre. The station has step-free access to all entrances and exits, and a lift connects street level to the concourse. Visit Liverpool says the main city-centre Merseyrail stations provide connectivity across the city via an underground network.

Access

Visit Liverpool says all licensed black cabs in Liverpool, and a number of licensed private hire vehicles, are wheelchair accessible. It also says all buses in Merseyside are accessible.

Liverpool call counts and the cab ranks

Liverpool recorded 33 calls in WakeRadar's AIS tracking over the date range shown above, about 2.6 a week. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines ranked first among the lines. Tuesday saw the most ships. Arrivals run around 6:15 am to 8:45 am. Black cabs can be hailed at the council's taxi stands, including Water Street and Lime Street Station.
