About Cruising from Yokohama
Yokohama is the port that unlocks Japan cruising, and Japan cruising is genuinely different from everything else in ocean travel. The Osanbashi terminal — a wooden-decked, organically-shaped pier designed by a collaborative team of architects — is one of the most visually striking pieces of cruise infrastructure on earth. It extends 500 metres into Tokyo Bay and has a public park on its roof. When Princess Diamond, Holland America's Eurodam, or Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas berths here, the image is architectural rather than merely logistical.
Getting to Yokohama from Tokyo is straightforward. The Tokyu Toyoko Line runs direct from Shibuya to Yokohama in about 30 minutes; the JR Yokosuka Line connects Tokyo Station to Yokohama in 25 minutes. If you're flying into Narita (NRT), the N'EX express train runs to Yokohama in about 90 minutes. If you're flying into Haneda (HND) — the more convenient option for Yokohama embarkations — the Keikyu Line runs to Yokohama in about 25 minutes. Haneda is worth the routing premium specifically for Yokohama sailings.
Japan sailings from Yokohama operate on a seasonality that is completely unlike the Caribbean or Mediterranean model. Spring sailings (late March through May) coincide with cherry blossom season — sakura timing varies year to year, but the window is roughly late March to mid-April and is actively timed around by the cruise lines that know their passenger base. These sailings sell out further in advance than any Japan routing. Summer (July through September) brings sailing to Japan's southern islands — Okinawa, Amami, Ishigaki — and occasionally to South Korea (Busan, Jeju). Autumn sailings catch fall foliage in Japan's northern regions.
The itinerary range is wider than most passengers realise before their first Japan sailing. The standard Golden Triangle (Yokohama, Kobe, Nagasaki, or Hiroshima) covers three completely different versions of Japan in a single week. Kobe gives you Osaka day-trip access (45 minutes by train) and one of Japan's most culinarily sophisticated cities in its own right. Nagasaki is the most emotionally complex port call in East Asian cruising — the Peace Park, the Atomic Bomb Museum, and the remarkable Glover Garden sit within a city that has rebuilt and moved forward in ways that give every visit a specific gravity. Hiroshima is the same, and Miyajima Island's floating torii gate is among the most photographed images in Japan for good reason.
Princess Cruises' Japan season is the most extensive, with Diamond Princess and Sapphire Princess operating multiple back-to-back departures from Yokohama between April and October. Holland America's offerings tend toward longer voyages — 21 nights or more — that give Japan real depth. Royal Caribbean offers more accessible price points on shorter 10 to 14 night circuits.
The Yokohama waterfront itself deserves a day. Minato Mirai — the waterfront regeneration district — has Yokohama's Cosmoworld ferris wheel, the Cup Noodles Museum, the KAAT arts centre, and some of the best views across Tokyo Bay in any weather. Chinatown in Yokohama (the largest in Japan) is a 15-minute walk from the Osanbashi terminal. Arriving two days before sailing is not excessive — one day for Yokohama itself, one day for a Tokyo day-trip.
