About Cruising from Fort Lauderdale

Port Everglades — the official name for what nearly everyone calls Fort Lauderdale's cruise port — handles an enormous volume of traffic with considerably less chaos than PortMiami. That's partly geography (the port is well-designed with clear terminal separation) and partly because the passenger mix skews toward repeat cruisers who know the drill. Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Beyond both homeport here, as does Holland America's Nieuw Statendam and several Princess ships. If you're looking at a premium or luxury sailing on the East Coast, there's a good chance Port Everglades is your departure point.

The airport situation is one of this port's genuine advantages. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is about 20 to 25 minutes from the cruise terminals by car, with no bridge or causeway complications. FLL consistently offers cheaper airfares than Miami International on domestic routes, and the drive to the port is easier. If you're flying in the day before, Fort Lauderdale has excellent hotel density: Las Olas Boulevard has boutique options, the beach strip has everything from budget to luxury, and prices are typically 15 to 20% lower than comparable Miami hotels.

Port Everglades operates across multiple terminals — Terminals 1, 2, 4, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25, 26, and 29 — and like PortMiami, terminal assignment matters for parking and drop-off. Celebrity's ships use the newer terminals with modern check-in infrastructure. HAL and Princess use terminals that have been updated but feel slightly more workmanlike. Parking is well-organised with shuttle service to most terminals, and the daily rate is competitive. I always recommend getting the luggage tag colors right before you hand bags to the porter — colors indicate deck assignment on the ship, and wrong-color tags create confusion that takes hours to sort out onboard.

Caribbean sailings dominate from Port Everglades, but the profile is different from Miami. Celebrity Edge's Eastern Caribbean itinerary hits St. Maarten, St. Kitts, and San Juan. Celebrity Beyond runs Western Caribbean routes to Belize, Roatan, and Cozumel. Princess operates both seven-night Caribbean loops and longer 10-night itineraries that reach Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao. Holland America leans toward longer voyages — 10 to 14 nights — that give the itinerary more room to breathe and reach less-visited islands.

Bermuda sailings are a Fort Lauderdale specialty worth calling out separately. The run from Port Everglades to Bermuda is typically seven nights with two or three days in port at King's Wharf. Bermuda is not the Caribbean — the vibe is quieter, more British, genuinely different. Pink-sand beaches, mopeds, excellent snorkeling, and a city (Hamilton) that doesn't feel like it was built around tourism. I've done this sailing twice and it consistently delivers more of what "getting away" actually means than a standard Caribbean run.

Peak season runs November through March for Caribbean sailings. Bermuda sailings cluster in spring and fall — April through June and September through October — when the crossing weather is calmer. Summer from Port Everglades can be excellent value on Caribbean routes if you're flexible, though August sees the most rain in the Caribbean itself.

The insider thing about Fort Lauderdale that most travelers miss: the city is genuinely livable in a way Miami isn't always. The pace is slower, the beach is accessible and not overrun, and Las Olas has real restaurants (not tourist traps). If you're arriving the day before your sailing, spend the evening on Las Olas rather than driving to Miami. You'll sleep better and be less stressed on embarkation morning.
