About Cruising from San Juan
San Juan's cruise terminals — primarily Piers 1, 3, and 4, with Old San Juan's historic fortifications visible from the ship as you dock — offer something no Florida port can match: you're starting your Caribbean sailing from inside the Caribbean itself. Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas homeports in San Juan, as do Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Constellation on rotating schedules. The result is that your first day at sea becomes a day in port, and the itinerary's eastern Caribbean reach is extended compared to what's possible from Miami or Fort Lauderdale.
Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) is about 20 minutes from the cruise terminals by car — a rideshare runs $15 to $25 depending on time of day. SJU is a major Caribbean hub with direct service from most U.S. cities (American, United, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest all have routes), and as a U.S. territory, Puerto Rico requires no passport for American citizens. You need a valid government-issued ID — driver's license is fine. That's a meaningful advantage for families or travelers who don't have current passports: you get a Caribbean sailing without the international travel overhead.
The Eastern Caribbean itinerary geography from San Juan is genuinely different. Celebrity Beyond's seven-night Eastern Caribbean from San Juan hits St. Maarten, St. Kitts, and St. Lucia — islands that are a 10 to 12 hour additional sail from Fort Lauderdale. Adventure of the Seas reaches St. Thomas, Barbados, and St. Lucia regularly. You're getting deeper into the Eastern Caribbean on a seven-night sailing from San Juan than you could ever achieve departing from the U.S. mainland. If St. Lucia or Barbados are on your list, San Juan makes the itinerary possible.
The port has two personalities that sometimes collide: homeport operations (where passengers are starting or ending their cruise) and transit port operations (where cruise ships stop for a few hours before continuing). On days when multiple ships are operating simultaneously, Old San Juan is crowded and the taxi situation near the terminals gets complicated. If you're homeporting from San Juan, time your arrival accordingly: mid-morning on a major embarkation day, the terminal area is calm; early afternoon, when transit ships are also in port, it's chaotic.
I've spent time in Old San Juan both as a transit passenger and in the days before a homeport sailing, and the pre-sailing version is dramatically better. Old San Juan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most historically rich colonial cities in the Americas. El Morro and San Cristóbal fortresses, the cobblestone streets, the painted colonial buildings — this is not a manufactured cruise port experience. It's a real city with centuries of history and a culture that doesn't orient itself around tourism even as it accommodates it.
The food is the best argument for arriving a day early. Puerto Rican cuisine — mofongo, pernil, tostones, fresh seafood — is exceptional and accessible. Fortaleza Street (La Calle Fortaleza) in Old San Juan has some of the best restaurants, including a concentration of modern Puerto Rican cooking that would be at home in any major city. Don't eat dinner on the ship your first night when you could be eating in San Juan.
Peak season is December through April: prices highest, weather most reliably dry, and the Eastern Caribbean islands at their best. Summer (June through August) is cheaper, and while hurricane season is technically active July through October, the actual statistical risk to booked sailings is low. Ships reroute around developing storms — they've been doing it for decades — and travel insurance covers trip interruption if itinerary changes happen.
