Royal Caribbean has spent twenty years winning the "most things to do" competition, and on their newest ships the results are genuinely jaw-dropping. Icon of the Seas, currently the world's largest cruise ship, has a category of entertainment features that simply don't exist anywhere else at sea.
Main Theater Productions
Royal Caribbean's main theater shows on Oasis and Icon-class ships are produced to a standard that competes with mid-tier touring productions on land. The productions are original work (not licensed Broadway titles), with professional casts of 10-20 performers, aerial rigging, sophisticated lighting, and sets that actually move. "Effectors" on Icon of the Seas and "Hairspray: The Arena Show" on Wonder of the Seas draw strong reviews. Most shows run about 60 minutes and are included in your fare.
Book main theater shows through the Royal Caribbean app as soon as you board. Popular nights sell out by afternoon on the first day.
The 270-Degree AquaTheater
On Oasis-class ships, the AquaTheater at the stern is a partially open-air venue where acrobats, high-divers, and synchronized swimmers perform in a purpose-built pool. Comedy and Live Music
Comedy Clubs on Royal Caribbean's newer ships run shows nightly with professional comedians on rotation. Typically three different performers over the course of a 7-night cruise. The venue is small (150-200 seats), the shows are adult-oriented, and you need to arrive 30 minutes early to guarantee a seat. Included in fare.
Live music on Royal Caribbean covers an unusual range: jazz bars, country-themed venues on some ships, and the full-scale rock concert environment of the 270-degree Music Hall on Wonder of the Seas.
Norwegian Cruise Line: Theater First
Norwegian spent the 2010s building a reputation for licensed Broadway productions at sea, and they were the first line to do it properly. Kinky Boots, Burn the Floor, Million Dollar Quartet, and Beetlejuice (on newer ships like Norwegian Prima) have all run on Norwegian stages with Broadway-caliber production values and professional casts.
The Broadway Model
What distinguishes Norwegian's theater program is the licensing. These are actual Broadway titles, produced with the same costume houses and set designers as the original productions, not cruise ship approximations. The casts are union talent. Bliss has "Jersey Boys." Encore has "Kinky Boots." Getaway has "Burn the Floor." The theater quality on these ships is the best in the cruise industry.
Shows are included in your fare and run multiple times per cruise. However, Norwegian's ships run the shows in smaller theater configurations than the main theater on some vessels, meaning they sell out faster. Book your preferred night early.
Howl at the Moon Dueling Pianos
Every ship in the Norwegian fleet has some version of a dueling-pianos bar, and Howl at the Moon is the best late-night venue consistently available across a cruise line. Two professional pianists, audience requests, sing-alongs, and the kind of gradually-unhinged crowd energy that peaks around 11 p.m. on sea nights. It's free, it runs late, and it's reliably the best bar night on the ship for most passengers.
Humor Me Comedy Club
Norwegian's comedy program has evolved from occasional stand-up sets into a dedicated venue on newer ships. The Humor Me Comedy Club on Bliss and Encore holds 200+ passengers and runs multiple headliners per cruise. Adult content. Free with fare. Worth planning around on sea days.
Escape Rooms and Laser Tag
Norwegian's Norwegian Bliss features a large-format laser tag arena that is genuinely well-designed. Not the cramped closet version some ships attempt. The escape rooms on Bliss and Encore use theatrical physical environments and hold groups of 6-10. About $15-25 per person.
Carnival: Energy Over Elegance
Carnival doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. Their entertainment is built for maximum engagement, high volume, and broad appeal. Which, depending on your temperament, is either perfect or exhausting. But "Playlist Productions", Carnival's signature concert-format shows, are actually excellent: polished, energetic performances built around popular music genres (rock, pop, country, R&B) with full production values and strong choreography.

Instead of a narrative musical, each show is a concert concept: the Country Roads show has line dancing; the Latin Nights show has salsa demonstrations. The production quality on Excel-class ships (Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee) is significantly better than older vessels. Newer lighting rigs and wider stages make a noticeable difference.
WaterWorks and BOLT
Carnival's Excel-class ships feature two entertainment innovations worth calling out:
BOLT: The first roller coaster at sea. It's a single-seater electric coaster that runs on a track around the top of the ship. At $15 per ride, it's neither long nor particularly thrilling compared to land coasters, but the novelty of riding a roller coaster in the middle of the ocean is real. It sells out on popular sea days. Book via the Carnival Hub app early on embarkation morning.
WaterWorks: The waterslide complex on Excel-class ships has 5-6 slides with varying intensity levels. The Kaleid-O-Slide on Mardi Gras is a 455-foot twisting tube with LED lights. Genuinely one of the better cruise ship waterslides.
Serenity Adults-Only
Carnival's Serenity deck area (adults-only, available on most ships) is technically a space, not entertainment, but the hammock nets suspended over the water and the calmer music policy make it the most genuinely relaxing space on Carnival ships. If you're cruising without kids and want to actually decompress, this is where to spend your sea days.
MSC Cruises: Technology and European Flair
MSC has grown from a budget-focused European carrier into a genuinely sophisticated entertainment operator, and their newest ships do things that Royal Caribbean hasn't attempted yet. The MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape feature the Carousel Lounge. A rotating dinner theater experience that is genuinely unlike anything else in the cruise industry.
The Carousel Lounge
The Carousel Lounge on Seashore-class ships is a circular venue that physically rotates while performers work simultaneously on the interior stage and the stationary outer ring. The dinner-theater format (extra charge, $40-60 per person) combines acrobatics, contemporary dance, and aerial performance with a set-menu dinner. It sounds gimmicky. It isn't. The combination of the rotating room mechanics and the high production quality of the performance makes it the most distinctive single entertainment experience currently at sea.
MSC AquaPark
MSC's AquaPark on Seashore and Seascape has four slides with varying configurations: two racing slides, a family raft slide, and the Himalayan Rush, which has banked turns and drops in a two-person tube. The park area itself is better designed than most cruise ship waterslides. Dedicated loungers, shade structures, and less of the walking-around-with-wet-feet chaos that afflicts Royal Caribbean's older AquaTheater areas.

Booking Entertainment: What You Need to Know
Book early, especially for small venues. Comedy clubs on Royal Caribbean and Norwegian hold 150-200 people. The shows run at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The 9 p.m. show books out faster. Arrive early or pre-book.
Sea days are competition days. On port days, venues are quiet and you can walk into almost anything. On sea days, FlowRider queues hit 45 minutes, escape rooms are booked solid, and the comedy club fills by 8:30 p.m. Plan thrill activities for your first sea day, when queues are shorter.
Most entertainment is included. Broadway shows, comedy clubs, AquaTheater, and waterslides are included in your base fare on all four lines. Escape rooms ($15-25), skydiving simulators ($35-45), specialty dinner shows ($40-60), and the BOLT coaster ($15) are the main add-ons worth budgeting for.
