Every few years, the cruise industry produces a cohort of ships that genuinely moves the baseline. The ships that debut or begin their first full seasons in 2026 are one of those cohorts. Royal Caribbean is pushing the boundary of scale again. Princess has reinvented its product from the keel up. Disney is entering Asia. MSC is bringing its most ambitious design to Miami. Celebrity is finishing its Edge-class fleet.
What follows is an honest look at each ship: what's genuinely new, what's marketing refinement, and what kind of traveler each one actually suits.

Star of the Seas. Royal Caribbean's Biggest Bet

Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas entered service in August 2025 as the world's second Icon-class ship, sharing the same 248,663 GT as sister ship Icon of the Seas. The ship carries approximately 7,600 passengers at double occupancy (20% more than Oasis-class ships) and homeports in Port Canaveral, Florida.
What's Actually New
Royal Caribbean didn't simply enlarge Icon of the Seas. Two years of passenger feedback from Icon's debut sailings shaped Star's design in specific ways.
Star Beach: The headline addition is exclusive access to a new Royal Caribbean private island destination called Star Beach. Unlike Perfect Day at CocoCay (which is accessible to most Royal Caribbean ships), Star Beach is reserved for Star of the Seas passengers, creating a private island experience that genuinely can't be replicated by booking on any other ship. The destination reportedly includes overwater bungalows, a swim-up bar, and beaches sized for the ship's passenger load rather than shared across multiple vessels.
Refined Category 6: Royal Caribbean's Category 6 waterpark, already the largest at sea on Icon, expands on Star with two new slides and a reconfigured pool area based on the most frequently used areas on Icon. The flow of the waterpark addresses bottlenecks that guests identified on early Icon sailings.
New dining concepts: Star introduces at least three dining venues that weren't on Icon, including an expanded taqueria concept and a new dessert-focused venue. The overall dining count exceeds 40 options on a single ship.
Neighborhood refinement: The neighborhood concept. Surfside for families, Central Park for dining, the Suite Neighborhood for suite guests, and so on. Remains the organizing framework, but transitions between neighborhoods have been smoothed architecturally based on the most common navigation complaints from Icon passengers.
Who Star of the Seas Is For
This is a ship designed to be a destination rather than a vehicle. If your ideal cruise involves maximal onboard activity. Waterslides, pools, specialty dining every night, Broadway shows, a full casino, multiple nightlife venues. Star of the Seas is the most complete expression of that product ever built.
If you want a quiet sea day, you'll find the ship large enough to locate quiet corners. But "quiet" is not the design intention, and the passenger mix reflects it.
Homeport: Port Canaveral, FL. Eastern and Western Caribbean
Sun Princess. Premium Reinvented
Sun Princess is the first ship in Princess Cruises' new Sphere class, and it represents the most significant product reinvention Princess has undertaken in over a decade. The previous Princess formula. Solid mainstream cruising with an older demographic and a reliable if unremarkable onboard product. Has been replaced by something considerably more ambitious.
The Piazza
The physical heart of Sun Princess is The Piazza, a reimagined central atrium that the design team at Princess spent three years developing. Where most cruise ship atriums are vertical glass tubes with bars at the bottom, Sun Princess's Piazza is a ground-level social space modeled on a Mediterranean town square. It spans three decks of height but reads horizontally. Restaurants, bars, and performance spaces open onto it from all sides at the ground level, and the space is designed for lingering rather than transit.
It's the most successful execution of the "ship as city" concept since Celebrity Edge's Eden, and considerably more livable than most attempts at the form.
Open Dining Across All Venues
Sun Princess eliminated the all-inclusive specialty dining package system. All 30+ dining venues are open with no mandatory upcharge. A genuine reversal of the industry trend toward fee-based specialty dining. You book a table at any restaurant, at any time, and your cruise fare covers the meal.
This is a significant philosophical shift and one that changes how you experience the ship. Without the mental math of "is this specialty dinner worth the extra charge," you simply eat where you want when you want. The main dining room consequently elevates its game, knowing it now competes directly with specialty restaurants for the same guests.
Pro tip: Demand for the most popular specialty restaurants on Sun Princess is high precisely because there's no financial barrier to booking them. Reserve your first-choice venues before sailing. Priority booking opens 60 days prior for all guests, earlier for Captain's Circle members.
The Enclave Suite Complex
Sun Princess's suite complex, The Enclave, occupies the forward upper decks and includes a private pool, restaurant, lounge, and concierge service. AquaClass cabins, a wellness-oriented category below suite class, include complimentary thermal spa access. The spa itself, designed with Italian wellness brand Espa, is the strongest in the Princess fleet.

Disney Adventure is the first Disney Cruise Line ship purpose-built for the Asian market. It homeports in Singapore and sails Southeast Asian itineraries, Singapore, Phuket, Bali, Vietnam, Japan, rather than the Caribbean or European routes of Disney's existing fleet.
Why This Ship Matters
Disney Adventure signals the extent of Disney's commitment to Asia-Pacific cruise tourism. The ship was designed with input from Asian markets: the entertainment lineup includes programming tailored to Singaporean, Malaysian, Japanese, and Chinese passengers; the dining options include Asian cuisine as a first-class option rather than an afterthought; and the ship's characters and IP mix skews toward properties with strong Asian fan bases. Including Pixar's recent Asian-market hits.
The Onboard Experience
Disney's formula. Family-focused, immersive theming, high production-value shows, Disney character experiences. Transfers intact to Adventure. The ship's IP theming covers the full Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars portfolio, with dedicated land/zone areas for each.
Western travelers booking Disney Adventure should know: this is not a Caribbean Disney cruise that happens to be in Asia. The ship was designed for Asian passengers' tastes. Some of the humor in shows translates differently. The dining defaults are different. The shore excursion content is specifically calibrated for Southeast Asian ports. For most Western families, this is a feature, genuine immersion in Asian culture through a Disney lens, rather than a bug.

Disney Adventure's home region of Southeast Asia offers some of the strongest port content of any cruise region: Komodo Island (dragons, genuinely), the temples of Vietnam, Phuket's beaches, and Bali's cultural sites. The ship's longer itineraries (10-14 nights) allow enough time in each port to do these destinations justice rather than the 6-hour stop that Caribbean itineraries often provide.
Homeport: Singapore. Southeast Asia year-round
MSC World America. The World Class Comes to Miami
MSC World America is the third ship in MSC's World class, joining MSC World Europa (2022) and MSC World Seashore. It homeports in Miami and sails Caribbean itineraries, making it the first World-class ship positioned specifically for the North American market.
The World Class Design
MSC World Europa set the template: a ship of approximately 215,000 gross tons carrying around 6,762 passengers, organized around a central "World Promenade". An indoor boulevard running the length of the ship with shops, bars, and restaurants facing inward. The design borrows from urban planning more than traditional cruise ship architecture.
On World America, the World Promenade is retained and extended with two venues calibrated specifically for American tastes: a sports bar with US sports broadcast rights, and a larger, more elaborate casino than World Europa's (US passengers spend significantly more in casinos than European passengers, and MSC has designed accordingly).
What's Different for the Miami Market
MSC has made specific adjustments for American passengers:
More American dining options: World America includes a burger restaurant and BBQ venue that weren't on World Europa, alongside the Mediterranean and international options from the base World class design.
Entertainment recalibration: The entertainment team is English-first (World Europa ran Mediterranean multilingual shows), with programming sourced for an American sensibility.
Caribbean itineraries: World America sails Eastern and Western Caribbean from Miami, serving the highest-demand US cruise market from its optimal homeport. MSC's newer private island destination, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, features prominently in multiple itineraries.
Pro tip: MSC's loyalty program, MSC Voyagers Club, offers meaningful early-boarding and cabin upgrade benefits that rival Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor tier. If you're a repeat MSC cruiser, the Voyagers Club tier should inform your cabin category decision. Status upgrades on World-class ships have more value than on smaller vessels.
Homeport: Miami. Eastern and Western Caribbean

Celebrity Xcel. The Edge Class, Completed
Celebrity Xcel is the fifth and final Edge-class ship from Celebrity Cruises, entering her first full season in 2026. If you're familiar with Celebrity Beyond or Celebrity Ascent, you know what to expect. Xcel carries the same design DNA with targeted refinements.
What's New on Xcel
AquaClass thermal spa access: The most significant addition on Xcel is direct thermal spa access for AquaClass cabin guests. AquaClass is Celebrity's wellness-focused cabin tier. A category above standard verandas but below suite class, with exclusive access to the Blu restaurant and spa thermal suite. On previous Edge-class ships, AquaClass included complimentary thermal suite access as a booking perk. On Xcel, AquaClass cabins on certain decks are physically adjacent to the spa, with direct access via a private corridor. It's a facility design change as much as a policy one.
Eden Café: A new daytime use of the Eden venue, Celebrity's three-story glass performance space at the aft, as a working café and informal coworking area during daylight hours. On previous Edge ships, Eden was essentially unused until evening. Xcel addresses this with a coffee and light-food service that activates the space from morning through afternoon.
Expanded Retreat: The Retreat (Celebrity's suite complex) on Xcel includes eight additional Sunset Suite cabins compared to the equivalent decks on Celebrity Beyond, increasing the number of guests who can access the exclusive Retreat experience without a full penthouse booking.
The Edge-Class Formula
The underlying strengths of Edge-class ships, the Magic Carpet, the Rooftop Garden, the Retreat Sundeck, Luminae, and Eden, are all present and well-executed on Xcel. At this point, Celebrity has refined the Edge formula across four ships, and the fifth benefits from that iteration.
For first-time Celebrity sailings or travelers who haven't yet sailed an Edge-class ship, Xcel is the sharpest version of the product. For those who've sailed multiple Edge ships, the differences are real but incremental.
Homeport: Fort Lauderdale — Caribbean and Europe (seasonal)

The Honest Summary
2026's new ships serve genuinely different buyers. Star of the Seas doubles down on Royal Caribbean's megaship philosophy — more of everything for guests who want maximum activity. Sun Princess is the most interesting design departure: a premium line that removed financial friction from specialty dining and bet that guests would reward the decision with loyalty. MSC World America is a smart market play — the World class design is strong, and Miami is the right homeport. Disney Adventure is a category unto itself: a geographically specific product for a specific market that Western travelers can enjoy but should understand was built for someone else. Celebrity Xcel is the quietest story of the group — iterative improvements to an already-excellent formula, which is exactly what Celebrity's guests asked for.
