The city, raw, alive, and genuinely itself in ways that tourist-polished ports often aren't, sits at the foot of Vesuvius with one of the world's great bays spread out before it. If you're weighing Barcelona versus Naples as your Mediterranean embarkation, Naples gives you more Italy, and Italy is almost always the answer.

Capodichino Airport (NAP) is about 6 kilometers from the city center and 30 minutes by taxi from the Beverello cruise terminal at the waterfront. Direct flights from most major European hubs are plentiful; North American travelers typically connect through Rome (FCO) or a major hub. The train from Rome Termini to Napoli Centrale takes about 1 hour 10 minutes on the high-speed Frecciarossa, a viable same-day arrival option if you want to spend the morning in Rome and the afternoon in Naples.

The pre-embarkation question in Naples isn't whether to explore, it's how much time to give it. The National Archaeological Museum houses the best Pompeii artifacts in existence; the visit takes two to three hours minimum. Pompeii itself is 30 minutes by commuter rail from Naples Garibaldi station and requires a half-day. The Amalfi Coast (Positano, Ravello, the drive from Sorrento) is a full day. Spaccanapoli, the long straight street cutting through the historic center, with its street food, churches, and chaos takes whatever time you give it. If you have only one day before sailing, I'd do Pompeii in the morning and Spaccanapoli in the evening. Don't do both Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in a single day, you'll do neither justice.

The terminal area is busy with hydrofoil traffic to Capri and Ischia running simultaneously, which adds to the noise but also to the sense that you're leaving from a real working port city rather than a purpose-built cruise theme park.

Peak season is April through October. October sailings are particularly good value: the Mediterranean weather is still excellent, prices drop, and the port crowds thin noticeably. Winter sailings from Naples lean toward the Canary Islands and Atlantic routes, the Western Med circuit is essentially a summer and shoulder-season operation.
