Cruising from San Francisco is an experience before you've even left the dock. Pier 27 sits on the Embarcadero waterfront with the Bay Bridge as a backdrop and the Golden Gate visible on clear days as you sail out of the harbor. Few embarkation experiences in the world match it for sheer visual drama.

The Port: Pier 27

Pier 27 is San Francisco's primary cruise terminal, located on the northern waterfront a 10-minute walk from the Ferry Building and 20 minutes from Union Square. The terminal is modern, well-organized, and handles traffic from Princess, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Celebrity, and others.
A secondary berth at Pier 35 (adjacent) handles overflow on double-ship days. Both terminals are within easy walking distance of the Embarcadero.
Getting to the Port
From SFO Airport: BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) connects the airport to downtown San Francisco in 30 minutes ($10). From Embarcadero BART station, Pier 27 is a 10-minute walk. Rideshare from the airport runs $35–$55 (traffic-dependent; avoid morning rush hours). Total travel time: 45–75 minutes.
From Oakland Airport: BART is also the best option. Oakland Airport to Embarcadero: 40 minutes, $12. Rideshare from Oakland: $35–$60.
From downtown hotels: Rideshare $15–$25, 10–20 minutes. Walking is feasible from Embarcadero hotels. Muni streetcar (F-line on Market Street) runs to the Ferry Building stop, a 10-minute walk from the pier.
Allow 2.5 hours from the airport on embarkation day to account for variables.

San Francisco is one of America's great cities and rewards two to three pre-cruise days. Priority experiences:
The Ferry Building: Farmers market Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays morning (the Saturday market is outstanding). Excellent restaurants inside including Slanted Door and the Hog Island Oyster Co.
Golden Gate Bridge: Walk or cycle the bridge (2km one way). Views from Battery Spencer (Marin Headlands side) are the best available. Rideshare to the viewpoint is faster than the bus.
Alcatraz: Book online well in advance (often sold out weeks ahead). The audio tour is genuinely excellent.
Mission District: Best food neighborhood in the city. Tacos at La Taqueria, coffee culture on Valencia Street, the 16th Street murals.
Fisherman's Wharf: Touristy but the sourdough bread bowls and Dungeness crab (October–June season) are genuinely worth it.
Hotel areas: Union Square (central, near everything), Embarcadero (walking distance to pier), North Beach (charming, quieter). Rates are high. Budget $200–$400/night for mid-range quality.

Alaska (14 nights round-trip or 7-night one-way to Vancouver/Seattle): The Inside Passage route adds extra sea days compared to Seattle departures but the Bay Area embarkation compensates.
Hawaii (14–16 nights round-trip): The Pacific crossing takes five sea days each way. Perfect for passengers who love time at sea. Ports typically include Hilo, Honolulu, Maui, and Kauai.
Mexico (7–10 nights): Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán. Good value, popular in winter months when northern California weather is less reliable.
