Holland America Line is adding permanent bandstands beside the Lido Pools on Oosterdam and Zuiderdam as part of a sweeping $500 million fleet renovation. The new venues will anchor live entertainment, from solo performers to full bands, while also serving as the central hub for sailaway parties and the cruise line's signature Orange Party, a Dutch-themed celebration featuring orange attire and traditional snacks.
The bandstands are a significant feature because they solve a common shipboard challenge: weather. Both Lido Pools feature retractable glass roofs, meaning entertainment can continue rain or shine. Oosterdam will be the first to debut the new bandstand in fall 2027, after completing her Evolution transformation. Passengers can already book post-renovation sailings beginning December 2, 2027. Zuiderdam will follow later, with post-renovation sailings available starting April 2, 2028.
These additions are part of Holland America's Evolution program, the largest fleet update in company history. Six ships total, Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam, Noordam, Nieuw Amsterdam, and Eurodam, will undergo major renovations over the coming years. Beyond the bandstands, both Oosterdam and Zuiderdam will receive the Grand Dutch Café, a counter-service restaurant serving Dutch breakfast items, snacks, and coffee. The venue was previously exclusive to Holland America's newer Pinnacle-class ships. The ships will also add new and reimagined stateroom categories and expanded dining options.
Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line, framed the bandstands as part of a broader effort to expand entertainment options across the fleet. While Holland America has not yet detailed all changes across all six ships, the investments signal a strategy to refresh aging mid-sized vessels with features and experiences from newer ships.
For cruise passengers, this means more opportunities for live entertainment and onboard activities, particularly during important moments like departure. The retractable roof ensures programming runs reliably, a practical addition that addresses a real limitation on many ships.
