Royal Caribbean has postponed an August 30 Alaska sailing aboard Serenade of the Seas by two days to perform unplanned maintenance in Vancouver. The ship will now depart September 1, and the voyage has been shortened from seven nights to five, with several key Alaskan ports removed from the itinerary.
The original cruise was scheduled to visit Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Prince Rupert, along with scenic cruising through the Inside Passage and Endicott Arm to Dawes Glacier. The revised itinerary cancels Sitka, Juneau, Endicott Arm, and Dawes Glacier entirely. Instead, passengers will sail the Inside Passage twice and stop only at Ketchikan and Prince Rupert before returning to Vancouver on September 6 as planned. The 90,090 gross-ton ship requires additional time in port for the maintenance work, though Royal Caribbean has not disclosed the specific nature of the repairs.
Passengers booked on this sailing have two main options. They can continue with the shortened voyage and receive onboard credit plus future cruise credit equivalent to two days of cruise fares per guest, plus reimbursement for hotel or airfare changes up to $300 per stateroom per day for hotels or $200 per guest for domestic flights. Alternatively, they can cancel for a full refund and a 25% future cruise credit. A third option allows guests to board Serenade of the Seas on August 30 or 31 and stay aboard as a hotel while in port, though the casino and shops will be closed and guests cannot go ashore.
This is the second major mechanical issue for Serenade of the Seas in two years. In June 2025, the ship operated at reduced speed and missed Icy Strait Point. A July 2025 sailing returned to Vancouver hours after departure and sailed more than a day late, forcing Sitka's cancellation. Royal Caribbean has not indicated whether the current maintenance relates to those earlier problems.
For passengers already committed to Alaska cruising this fall, the delay and shortened itinerary represent a significant change to the experience they booked. Those with flexibility should evaluate the revised ports and weigh the compensation package against booking alternative cruises or rescheduling for a future sailing.
