Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that Norwegian Sun will remain in Copenhagen for two unscheduled overnight stays during its September 23 departure, extending the ship's stay at the Danish capital while routine maintenance is performed. The 1,976-guest vessel will not leave port until Friday, September 25, pushing back the remainder of the 10-day Baltic itinerary by two days.
The extended Copenhagen stop means the planned visit to Oslo, Norway on September 24 is cancelled, as is the originally scheduled sea day on September 25. However, all other ports remain intact: Warnemunde (Berlin), Gdynia (Poland), Klaipeda (Lithuania), Riga (Latvia), Nynashamn (Sweden), Tallinn (Estonia), and Helsinki (Finland) will be visited as rescheduled. Norwegian Sun will depart Copenhagen at 5 p.m. on Friday and still reach Warnemunde by 6 a.m. Saturday, given the ports are just over 100 miles apart.
Norwegian Cruise Line has notified affected passengers by email and stressed that the maintenance does not compromise ship or guest safety. Embarkation still occurs on the originally scheduled date, September 23, and guests must arrive during their pre-selected check-in window that day, even though the ship will not depart that evening. Every passenger will receive a $100 non-refundable onboard credit, split between the first two guests in each cabin.
The cruise line has not disclosed which ship system requires the work. This is the second time in recent weeks that Norwegian Sun has needed an extended Copenhagen stay for repairs. In August, two Baltic sailings were disrupted when the ship underwent unplanned propulsion system work in the same port. Norwegian Cruise Line has not clarified whether the current maintenance is related to those earlier repairs.
For cruise passengers, this serves as a reminder that even modern ships require frequent upkeep and schedule changes can happen with relatively short notice. Travelers booked on this sailing should review their revised itinerary and adjust any pre-cruise plans accordingly, particularly those planning to book independent activities in Oslo.
