Norwegian Prima Guests Notified of Hot Tub Closures and Onboard Testing

Norwegian Cruise Line is notifying passengers who sailed on Norwegian Prima in May and July 2026 of three reported cases of Legionnaires' disease among guests. The cruise line has partnered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate the cases and conduct testing onboard the 3,099-passenger ship, which operates 7-night Caribbean sailings from Port Canaveral.

All water system testing completed so far has returned negative results for Legionella bacteria, the organism that causes the disease. However, it remains unclear whether the three infected passengers contracted the illness aboard the ship or from another source entirely. Because the disease has an incubation period of 2-14 days or longer, passengers diagnosed after their cruise may have been exposed either onboard or before they ever boarded.

As a precaution, Norwegian Cruise Line has closed all public hot tubs and private balcony whirlpools pending completion of CDC-approved sampling and remediation. The ship continues operating otherwise normally. Legionnaires' disease is a serious form of pneumonia spread through mist from water systems like showers and hot tubs, not through direct contact between people. Older passengers, those with chronic lung disease, weakened immune systems, or smoking histories face higher risk. Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches. Anyone experiencing these signs after a cruise should seek immediate medical attention.

This is the third Legionnaires' case notification involving Norwegian Cruise Line ships within recent months, following similar alerts on Norwegian Encore in February and Norwegian Epic in November 2025. Passengers currently booked on Norwegian Prima should review the notification they receive and consult their doctor if they develop respiratory symptoms weeks after sailing.
