MSC Cruises has named its new private island destination Catalina Sugar Beach, launching in November 2026 with a focus on pristine beaches and luxury amenities. Located on Catalina Island near La Romana on the Dominican Republic's southeastern coast, the destination will debut as a port of call for MSC Opera and Explora Journeys vessels, with the 2,150-guest MSC Opera becoming the first ship to visit on November 17.
The development has been fast-tracked to open in just three months, an unusually quick timeline for a cruise destination. Because Catalina Island is a protected natural monument, the project prioritizes environmental preservation while adding upscale facilities. Guests will find an open-air beach pavilion buffet serving both international and Dominican specialties, two bars with palapa-roofed seating, water sports rentals, and premium daybeds and cabanas. A scenic pathway winds through the natural vegetation with overlooks and interpretive signage.
MSC Opera will be homeported from La Romana beginning in November and will visit Catalina Sugar Beach on every 7-night Eastern Caribbean sailing, calling also at Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and the British Virgin Islands. The ship's inaugural call lasts from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on its first day. Explora Journeys' Explora III will arrive on November 19. All MSC Group ships and Explora Journeys vessels will have access to the destination, and guests staying at the nearby Casa de Campo Resort and Villas will also be able to visit.
This marks MSC Group's second private Caribbean destination, following Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in the Bahamas, which has proven popular with guests seeking exclusive beach experiences without the crowds of traditional ports. For MSC Opera passengers booking Eastern Caribbean itineraries, a new port call with a curated onboard experience is now guaranteed on every sailing, adding value to those cruises without extra cost.
