MSC Cancels Repositioning Voyage to South Africa

MSC Armonia repositioning cruise cancelled over Suez Canal geopolitical concerns. Passengers get full refund or rebooking options.

MSC Cruises has cancelled a 26-night repositioning voyage aboard the MSC Armonia originally scheduled to depart from Marghera, Italy, on November 1, 2026. The line cited ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea and Suez region, stating it cannot guarantee safe passage through the Suez Canal. The voyage was intended to reposition the ship to South Africa for the 2026-27 winter season, calling at ports in Croatia and Greece before transiting the canal and visiting Red Sea destinations including Aqaba, Mahé, Diego Suarez, and Port Louis.

Disruptions to major maritime routes continue to affect cruise operations across the industry. The Suez Canal shortcut, which saves weeks of sailing time compared to rerouting around Africa, has been subject to attacks and security concerns for months. Rather than risk an extended diversion or potential incident, MSC opted to cancel the repositioning sailing outright.

Passengers with bookings have three options for recourse. They can cancel entirely for a full refund with no penalty. Alternatively, they may transfer to any other MSC Grand Voyage of similar duration, including sailings with up to three additional nights, with MSC guaranteeing the more favorable fare between the original and new booking. A third option allows passengers to rebook on any other MSC cruise at no charge, with the new fare applied and prior payments transferred as credit.

MSC stated that passenger safety and peace of mind were the primary factors in the decision. The Armonia was slated to debut a new series of South Africa itineraries during the region's 2026-27 winter season. The exact timing of those sailings now depends on whether geopolitical conditions in the Red Sea and Suez region stabilize in the coming months. Cruise passengers planning winter voyages to southern Africa should verify current itineraries and routing with their cruise line, as additional schedule adjustments remain possible if regional security concerns persist.
