Disney Cruise Line guests heading to Castaway Cay in the Bahamas will find the island's main waterslide attraction temporarily out of commission. Pelican Plunge, a floating platform featuring two twisting slides, has closed for refurbishment with no reopening date announced yet.
The closure affects one of the few waterslide options available on Disney's private island. Pelican Plunge sits anchored off the northern family beach and includes an open slide, an enclosed slide, a water dump bucket, and water guns, all with nautical theming. Swimmers at least 38 inches tall can access the slides by swimming out to the platform. Disney Cruise Line notified guests on Facebook that while the slides are down for maintenance, the water play structure in the swimming lagoon and Spring-A-Leak remain open for families seeking splash-time activities.
The platform requires regular upkeep typical of waterslide facilities: coating maintenance, pump servicing, and structural work. Disney has not specified which repairs are currently underway or when guests can expect the attraction to reopen. The closure will likely frustrate families planning visits, as Castaway Cay lacks the extensive waterpark offerings found on rival cruise lines' private islands. Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day CocoCay, for comparison, features 14 waterslides across two parks. Norwegian Cruise Line's Great Stirrup Cay recently expanded to include multiple slides, a rapid river, and cliff-diving features.
Guests visiting Castaway Cay during the closure still have options beyond Pelican Plunge. Ships like Disney Wish and Disney Treasure carry their own AquaMouse water coasters onboard, and the island offers snorkeling, banana boat rides, and other water activities. The temporary nature of the closure means passengers should monitor Disney Cruise Line communications for updates before finalizing port-day plans.
