The mix-up occurred on March 5 in Palermo, when he was mistaken for a French-Tunisian man wanted on European drug trafficking charges from 2019. Both men shared the same first and last name and identical birth dates. Despite presenting identification documents and attempting to explain the confusion, Amir was arrested. A language barrier with Italian authorities and the striking coincidence of their biographical details complicated the situation. Fingerprint analysis after seven hours confirmed his innocence.
The incident caused significant fallout beyond the arrest itself. Amir's cabin was searched without his consent, and he was escorted publicly to the port police station. While detained, he was reportedly told he could face up to 18 months in prison or a fine of 1,800 euros.
