Carnival Cruise Line has named Daniela Gargiulo as the first female staff captain in the line's history, a promotion announced this month aboard Carnival Adventure in Sydney. Gargiulo, who serves as second-in-command to Captain Francesco Bencivenga, oversees marine operations, safety, and crew leadership on the ship, which sails shorter and longer cruises throughout Australia and the South Pacific.
Gargiulo's path to this role began at age 14 when she enrolled in nautical school in Italy, launching a career dedicated to maritime work. She joined Carnival Cruise Line as a Deck Cadet in 2013 and spent 13 years advancing through the ranks. She moved to Carnival Adventure last year before receiving her staff captain appointment earlier this month.
In a statement, Gargiulo expressed her pride in breaking this barrier within the cruise industry. She highlighted her appreciation for working with international crew members from diverse backgrounds and said she was excited to begin this new chapter aboard Carnival Adventure. Captain Bencivenga emphasized the significance of the promotion, calling it "a vital step forward for gender diversification in the maritime industry" that opens doors for future female leaders.
Carnival Adventure is one of two ships that transitioned to Carnival Fun Ships after Carnival Corporation dissolved its P&O Cruises Australia brand. The vessel now operates from Sydney under Carnival's Australian operations.
This appointment reflects broader industry efforts to increase representation in senior maritime roles, though women remain significantly underrepresented in command positions aboard cruise ships. For passengers, leadership diversity on deck can signal a cruise line's commitment to inclusive hiring and may appeal to travelers who value seeing women in senior operational roles.
