Carnival Cruise Director Says Goodbye After 10 Years at Sea

Robby Howell, one of Carnival's most recognizable cruise directors, is stepping down after a decade at sea. His final sailing will be a 7-night Eastern Caribbean voyage aboard Carnival Venezia departing Port Canaveral on November 1, ending November 8, 2026. The decision is entirely his own, made to start a new chapter on land with his wife.

Howell's path to the cruise director role reads like something out of a recruitment success story. Working as a front desk manager at a beach resort in 2016, he mentioned his cruise-director ambitions to a passing Carnival recruiter who happened to check in for a convention. That chance encounter launched his career. He started as a junior Fun Squad member and rose through the ranks, eventually landing his dream job as cruise director aboard Carnival Conquest in 2023 before transferring to the larger Carnival Venezia.

Known for his approachability and strong passenger connections, Howell has built a significant following among frequent cruisers. Passengers sailing between now and November 1 will have the chance to meet him during what he's calling "Robby's Retirement Run." Tyler Meehan will assume the cruise director role on Venezia beginning November 1, overlapping with Howell's final sailing before continuing through March 14, 2027.

Howell's departure marks the latest shift among Carnival's visible entertainment leadership. Cruise Director Gabby Gamboa announced her exit in July, just days before a planned four-month contract was set to begin. At the same time, the cruise line continues to promote new talent, including Fun Squad member Sara Tasko earlier this year.
