Start planning 9-12 months ahead for the best cabin selection and early bird rates. Wave Season (January-March) offers the deepest discounts. Last-minute deals can save money but limit your options.
Royal Caribbean and Norwegian are excellent for first-timers. Royal Caribbean offers the widest variety of activities and ship sizes, while Norwegian's Freestyle Cruising approach is relaxed and flexible. Both have ships sailing from major US ports.
A 7-night Caribbean cruise starts around $500-800 per person for inside cabins on budget lines (Carnival, MSC). Mid-range lines (Royal Caribbean, Norwegian) run $800-1,500. Premium (Celebrity) costs $1,200-2,500, and luxury (Viking, Regent) starts at $3,000+. Add 30-50% for gratuities, drinks, excursions, and WiFi on non-inclusive lines.
Cruises offer better value if you want to visit multiple destinations, enjoy diverse entertainment, and don't mind sharing space with thousands of guests. All-inclusive resorts are better if you prefer one beach, unlimited relaxation, and predictable costs with no add-ons.
For closed-loop cruises from US ports (departing and returning to the same US port), US citizens can use a birth certificate and government ID. However, a passport is strongly recommended in case of emergencies requiring you to fly home from a foreign port. International cruises always require a passport.
