Every spring, hundreds of cruise ships quietly migrate between ocean basins. Caribbean ships reposition to the Mediterranean. Alaskan ships head south to Hawaii or Mexico. Pacific ships cross to Australia. The cruise lines need to move these vessels, but they cannot sail them empty — so they sell tickets at dramatically reduced prices.

These are repositioning cruises, and they represent one of the most consistent sources of genuine cruise value in the industry. Prices that would be $200/night on a standard sailing drop to $60–$90/night. Fourteen-night transatlantic crossings sometimes sell for less than a 4-night Bahamas cruise.

What Is a Repositioning Cruise?

A repositioning cruise (sometimes called a "repo cruise") occurs when a cruise ship needs to physically move from one homeport to another. The ship has to go anyway — so the cruise line fills it with passengers.

The defining characteristics:

One-way itinerary — you board in one city and disembark in a different city, often on a different continent
Unusual port combinations — stops you would never see on a standard 7-night circular itinerary (Azores, Funchal, Reykjavik, Panama Canal, Honolulu)
More sea days — crossing an ocean takes time; 3–7 consecutive sea days are common
Lower prices — cruise lines price these aggressively because demand for one-way long-haul sailings is lower
Longer voyages — typically 10–21 nights, with transatlantic crossings around 14–16 nights

The itinerary is not a marketing creation. The ship is genuinely going from Point A to Point B, and you are riding along.

When Do Repositioning Cruises Happen?

Repositioning sailings are concentrated in two windows:

Spring (April – May)

The biggest repositioning window. Caribbean season winds down as summer approaches, and the Mediterranean sailing season opens. Dozens of ships migrate east:

Miami / Fort Lauderdale / San Juan → Barcelona / Rome (Civitavecchia) / Southampton
Often stopping in: Azores (Ponta Delgada), Lisbon, Madeira, Canary Islands, Gibraltar

This is the most popular repositioning direction and the easiest to find.

Fall (October – November)

The reverse migration. Mediterranean and Northern European summer season closes; ships return west for Caribbean season:

Barcelona / Rome / Athens → Miami / Fort Lauderdale / New York
Sometimes stopping in: Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Bermuda, Azores (eastbound approach)

Alaska Season Transitions (April–May, September–October)

Alaskan summer season (May–September) requires ships to arrive and depart:

Southbound (September–October): Juneau / Seward → San Diego, Los Angeles, or Hawaii — spectacular Pacific coast repositioning with stops in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest
Northbound (April): Los Angeles / Vancouver → Juneau — often stops in Seattle

Pacific / Australia Transitions (October–November, March–April)

Best Repositioning Routes for First-Timers

Caribbean to Mediterranean (Spring)

Fort Lauderdale or Miami → Barcelona or Rome, 14–16 nights

The classic repository. You get 3–4 sea days in the Atlantic, stops in the Azores (one of the most underrated Atlantic island groups), possibly Madeira or Lisbon, then arrival in Europe. You are in Barcelona or Rome — starting a European vacation having already had two weeks at sea.

The logistics are manageable: fly home from any major European hub. If you already have a Europe trip planned for summer, timing a spring repositioning as your outbound transit is efficient.

Mediterranean to Caribbean (Fall)

Barcelona or Athens → Miami or Fort Lauderdale, 14–16 nights

The reverse, and often cheaper because fewer people want to end in Florida than in Europe. Great for end-of-summer Atlantic crossings with warm weather the full voyage. Possible stops: Canary Islands, Cape Verde.

Alaska South Repositioning

Seward (Anchorage) or Juneau → Los Angeles or San Diego, 10–14 nights

The Pacific repositioning along the coast is spectacular: Hubbard Glacier if you depart from Seward, Inside Passage, Victoria, BC, Pacific coast southbound. Arrives in LA or San Diego in time for a California trip. One-way flight home from Southern California.

Pacific Crossing (Advanced)

Los Angeles → Sydney via Honolulu, 24–35 nights

This is the "once in a lifetime" repositioning category. You cross the entire Pacific Ocean, spend 3–5 days in Hawaii (sometimes docked in Honolulu), continue to Samoa or Fiji on some itineraries, then arrive in Australia. It is a genuine ocean crossing. Thirty sea days is meditative, not boring — for the right traveler.

The Pros of Repositioning Cruises

Dramatically lower prices. The 50–70% discount is real and consistent. There is no comparable discount mechanism in regular cruise pricing.

Ports you cannot get any other way. The Azores, Madeira, Cape Verde, Funchal, Bermuda as a transit stop, Pitcairn Island (rare) — these appear on repositioning itineraries because the ship has to pass near them anyway. On standard 7-night Caribbean sailings, you will never see them.

Genuine sea days. If you like sea days — and many experienced cruisers do — repositioning sailings deliver them. Two consecutive days crossing the mid-Atlantic with nothing visible in any direction is a legitimately different experience from a port-every-day Caribbean circuit.

Long voyages at short-voyage prices. A 15-night transatlantic cruise for $900 works out to $60/night. This is less than many hotel rooms in the port cities the ship visits. All meals, entertainment, and accommodation included.

Onboard community. Repositioning sailings attract a disproportionate number of experienced, passionate cruisers. The onboard social culture — particularly around sea day activities, lectures, and enrichment programming — tends to be more engaged than a standard 7-night sailing.

The Cons of Repositioning Cruises

One-way flights. This is the most significant logistical challenge. You fly to the departure port and need a separate flight home from the arrival port. One-way international flights can be expensive and can significantly erode the price advantage — particularly for transatlantic crossings. Budget the return flight honestly before comparing total costs.

Long sea day stretches. Four consecutive sea days crossing the Atlantic is wonderful for some travelers and tedious for others. Know your preference honestly. If you need a port every day to feel like you are "getting value," repositioning sailings are a poor fit.

Limited scheduling flexibility. Repositioning sailings happen on fixed dates dictated by the fleet calendar. You cannot shift the departure date. If your vacation dates do not align with the repositioning window, the opportunity does not exist for you.

Unusual arrival cities. Arriving into Civitavecchia (Rome's port) rather than a major hub means additional transfers. Not a problem, but worth planning.

Booking competition. The value is known in the cruise community. Good repositioning sailings at the best prices sell early — often 12–18 months in advance for the most sought-after spring transatlantics.

How to Find Repositioning Cruises

Cruise line websites directly. All major lines list repositioning sailings in their standard inventory. Search for 12–21 night itineraries with unusual port combinations. The phrases "transatlantic," "repositioning," and "one-way" are often in the description.

Cruise booking aggregators. Sites like Cruises.com, CruiseCritic's search, and Vacations To Go's "Last Minute Deals" section specifically highlight repositioning inventory.

Set alerts. Most cruise booking sites allow price alerts. Set an alert for your preferred route 12–15 months out and watch for fare releases.

Travel agents. Agents who specialize in cruising often hear about repositioning inventory before it goes fully public and have access to group rate blocks that aggregate into additional savings.

Timing: The best prices on spring transatlantics release in August–October of the previous year. Fall repositioning fares release in spring. Book early for prime sailings; book late (within 60–90 days) for deep last-minute discounts if flexibility allows.
