Piraeus has been Athens' port for over 2,500 years, and today it handles more cruise passengers than almost any other Mediterranean port. As a departure point for Eastern Mediterranean itineraries, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, the Adriatic, it is unmatched in strategic position. The smart move, as always, is arriving early enough to experience Athens before your voyage begins.

The port area includes basic services, a few cafes, transport links, luggage storage, but the real action is in Athens proper. Unlike Barcelona or Lisbon, Piraeus is not a city you wander on a casual afternoon.
Getting from Athens to Piraeus
Metro: The M1 (Green Line) runs directly from Monastiraki (city center/Acropolis area) to Piraeus in about 20 minutes for around €1.20. This is the best option for independent travelers.
Taxi: €20–€30 from central Athens, 25–40 minutes depending on traffic. Athens traffic can be severe; build in buffer time.
Cruise Line Transfer: Available from Athens airport and city hotels. Convenient but costly.
From Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos), the metro runs direct to Monastiraki where you connect to the Piraeus line. Total journey approximately 50 minutes, cost around €9.
Pre-Cruise Athens: What to Prioritize
Athens rewards at least two full days before embarkation:
Day 1. Ancient Athens: Start at the Acropolis at opening (7:30am in summer) to beat the heat and crowds. The Parthenon, Erechtheion, and Propylaea are extraordinary; allow two hours. Descend to the Ancient Agora. Lunch in Monastiraki. Afternoon: Acropolis Museum (world-class, recently expanded). Evening: dinner in Psirri neighborhood.
Day 2, Neighborhoods: Morning at the National Archaeological Museum (one of the world's great collections, often overlooked). Afternoon: wander Plaka and Anafiotika (the island-village neighborhood below the Acropolis). Evening: rooftop bar views of the illuminated Parthenon.
Hotels on or near the Acropolis hill (Monastiraki, Plaka, Koukaki) are ideal for walkability. The Syntagma area is equally central with more mainstream hotel options.

April, May, September, and October offer the best combination of weather (warm but not brutal), manageable crowds, and reasonable pricing. July and August in the Aegean are hot (35°C+ in Santorini), extremely crowded, and expensive. The shoulder seasons are superior in almost every respect.
