Venice's relationship with cruise ships has been contentious for years. The sight of 300-meter vessels gliding past St. Mark's Square became a symbol of overtourism, and in 2021 Italy banned large cruise ships from the Venice lagoon. The situation has continued to evolve, and for 2026, cruise passengers need to understand the current logistics before they arrive.

The Current Situation

As of 2026, cruise ships over 25,000 GRT are prohibited from transiting the Giudecca Canal past the historic city center. Large ships now use one of two alternative ports:

Porto Marghera: On the mainland across the lagoon from Venice proper. Industrial in feel, but the infrastructure is solid and water bus connections to Venice are available. Transfer time to Piazza San Marco: approximately 30–45 minutes by water bus or 20 minutes by land bus + vaporetto combination.

Chioggia: A historic fishing town at the southern end of the lagoon, about 50km from Venice. Bus services to Venezia Mestre train station (then 10 minutes by train to Venice Santa Lucia) take approximately 45–60 minutes total.

Smaller ships (under 25,000 GRT) — boutique lines like Azamara, Windstar, and Seabourn — may still access the city center terminals at Marittima (Terminal Fusina). If your ship is small, verify this in advance with your cruise line.

Getting from the Port to Venice

From Marghera: The ACTV waterbus (Line 17 or dedicated transfer service) takes you across the lagoon to Piazzale Roma, the main bus/taxi arrival point in Venice. From Piazzale Roma, the city is on foot. Journey: 25–35 minutes, €8–€15 depending on route.

From Chioggia: ATVO buses run to Venezia Mestre; trains continue to Santa Lucia station in Venice. Total journey: 50–70 minutes, €10–€15.

Taxi: Water taxis from Marghera cost €80–€120 and are not materially faster than the waterbus. Land taxis to Mestre + vaporetto is a cheaper alternative.

Cruise Line Transfers: Available and reasonable if the logistics feel daunting. Book in advance.

Venice in a Day: What to Prioritize

Venice is overwhelming and the instinct is to try to see everything. Resist this. Pick three areas and do them well:

Piazza San Marco and surrounds: St. Mark's Basilica (queue is long — book skip-the-line entry online), Doge's Palace (book in advance), the Bell Tower (great views, shorter queue). Allow 3 hours.

Rialto and sestieri: Walk from San Marco to the Rialto Bridge via the back streets. The bridge itself is impressive; the market beneath it is excellent in the morning. Allow 1.5 hours.

Dorsoduro and the Accademia: If art is your thing, the Accademia gallery contains the finest collection of Venetian painting. The Zattere promenade alongside the Giudecca Canal is Venice's most pleasant walking stretch. Allow 2 hours.

Skip the gondola if you're short on time (€80–€100 for 30 minutes, enjoyable but not the best value). Take a vaporetto (water bus) ride instead for €8 — the Grand Canal from a vaporetto is the authentic Venice experience.

July and August bring extreme crowds and humidity; April–June and September–October are significantly more pleasant
