What Not to Bring
These items will be confiscated at embarkation. All major cruise lines prohibit them for fire safety and security reasons.
Irons and steamers
Fire hazard. All cruise lines prohibit them. Use the ship's laundry service or pack wrinkle-resistant fabrics.
Surge protectors and extension cords with surge protection
Fire hazard. Only power strips WITHOUT surge protection are allowed. Check the label carefully.
Candles, incense, and anything with an open flame
Fire hazard. This includes birthday candles. Bring LED candles or battery-operated alternatives.
Hot plates, toasters, and electric kettles
Fire hazard. Coffee makers are also prohibited. Use the ship's room service (often free) for hot beverages.
Drones
Prohibited on all major cruise lines due to safety and privacy concerns. They will be confiscated at embarkation.
Hoverboards and electric skateboards
Lithium battery fire risk. Segways, self-balancing scooters, and similar devices are not allowed.
Packing by Destination
Different cruise destinations require different gear. Here is what to add to your base packing list for each region.
Caribbean
- Reef-safe sunscreen (required by law in many Caribbean ports)
- Water shoes for rocky beaches and snorkeling
- Lightweight, breathable clothing (linen, cotton)
- Waterproof phone case for water excursions

Note Caribbean cruises are casual. Pack light, breathable fabrics. You will rarely need more than shorts and a sundress during the day.

Note Mediterranean cruises involve more walking than Caribbean itineraries. Comfortable shoes are your most important item. Dress codes for churches require covered shoulders and knees.
