The Sailing Ships
The Wind Spirit and Wind Star carry just 148 guests. They are powered by computer-controlled sails (the crew doesn't scramble the rigging) but are genuine sailing vessels that cut engines when the wind cooperates. The onboard atmosphere is relaxed and social. Think a superyacht charter with 70 other couples rather than a floating hotel.
Wind Surf is the largest of the three at 312 guests and five masts. The largest sailing vessel in commercial cruise service. Despite the added size it retains the yacht feel, with a water sports platform at the stern and a dive and watersports program that genuine sailing enthusiasts appreciate.
The Star-Class Motor Yachts
After acquiring three former Seabourn ships, Windstar completed a major refurbishment program (the "Star Class Transformation") that brought them up to a competitive luxury standard. Port selection is where Windstar genuinely shines. On a Mediterranean sailing, you might dock in Kotor (Montenegro), Hvar (Croatia), or Portoferraio (Elba). Onboard Life
Windstar's atmosphere is deliberately casual. There are no formal nights, no required dress codes, and the line actively encourages guests to think of the ship as their personal yacht. The open-bridge policy, guests can visit the bridge when not in port, is a reflection of this spirit.
Dining is a strong point. The Candles dinner under the stars (on the sailing ships) is a signature experience, and the main dining rooms consistently produce food well above the standard for ships of this size.
Who It's For
Windstar attracts experienced cruisers who've done the big ships and want something different. Sailors and nautically-minded travelers feel at home on the Wind-class vessels. Those who value port depth over onboard amenities find the itinerary logic compelling regardless of which ship they're on.
Children are technically welcome but rare. The line is not designed for families.
Value
Fares run from around $250 to $500 per person per night, with the sailing ships at the lower end. Gratuities, drinks, and excursions are generally not included, which inflates the true cost. Factor in at least $100/day per person for drinks and tips before comparing to all-inclusive competitors.
