Raising Six Sailors Aboard a 50-Foot Trimaran

A family of six has spent 14 years sailing full-time aboard their 50-foot trimaran, Thunderbird, with their four children gaining practical maritime skills through extended voyages. Following a 5,000-nautical-mile passage from South America to Trinidad, the young crew demonstrated newfound maturity and self-motivation across navigation, helmsmanship, and sail management. Shortly after arriving in Chaguaramas, the family stripped excess weight from the vessel and set sail again toward the US Virgin Islands, timing their departure to avoid approaching hurricane season. The passage north proved challenging, with strong Gulf Stream currents and 20-25-knot winds creating aggressive conditions quite different from their recent equatorial sailing. The lighter boat responded noticeably to these conditions, allowing faster speeds but also revealing increased sensitivity in the rigging.
