Mexico's government has rejected Royal Caribbean's proposed Perfect Day Mexico private destination, citing environmental concerns. Environment Minister Alicia Bárcena announced the decision on May 19, confirming the cruise line is withdrawing the project. The 90-hectare waterpark near Mahahual would have featured over 30 slides and welcomed up to 21,000 daily visitors. Officials expressed alarm about impacts on the Mesoamerican Reef and surrounding mangrove forests that serve as habitat for jaguars and sea turtles. A Change.org petition opposing the development gathered more than 4 million signatures. Analysts had expected Perfect Day Mexico to exceed the success of Perfect Day CocoCay and significantly boost Caribbean cruise operations from Texas. Royal Caribbean stated it remains committed to Mexico investments and plans stakeholder discussions about economic and environmental contributions.
