MSC Cruises has installed a spectacular 39-foot stainless steel Dragon sculpture aboard MSC World Asia, the cruise line's newest mega-ship set to debut in December 2026. The installation, shared in a video by MSC Cruises, shows crews using cranes to hoist individual sections of the sculpture over the vessel and assemble them above the World Promenade before raising it into its final position.
The Dragon is no simple decoration. Fabricated by Milan-based Balich Wonder Studio, the sculpture measures 11.5 feet wide and features 680 mirrors, 400 meters of strip lighting, and over 3,000 LED lights. When illuminated at night, the pearlescent white artwork creates an ambient focal point in the heart of the ship, making it impossible to miss during any promenade stroll.
The Dragon sits at the center of MSC World Asia's Asian-inspired design theme, which sets this 215,863-ton ship apart from her World-class sisters. The vessel also features an 8-ton illuminated Tree of Life installation (inspired by Singapore's Marina Bay Supertrees), a 266-foot dry slide called the Spiral stretching across 12 decks, and a pan-Asian specialty restaurant serving Southeast Asian cuisine alongside a regional-flavored bar. These cultural details give MSC World Asia distinct personality compared to the earlier MSC World Europa and MSC World America.
The ship has progressed steadily toward its December debut. Construction began in April 2024, the vessel floated out in November 2025, and initial sea trials occurred in July 2026. The inaugural sailing departs December 4, 2026, from Barcelona on a seven-night Mediterranean itinerary. Passengers boarding for that maiden voyage will be among the first to experience the Dragon and the ship's full Asian-themed design package in person.
MSC has ordered four World-class ships total: MSC World Atlantic launches in 2027, with two additional vessels scheduled for 2030 and 2031. For travelers considering a next-gen mega-ship cruise, MSC World Asia offers a fresh cultural angle on familiar World-class amenities.
