Cruise Ships Rocked by Biggest Earthquake to Hit Cuba in Over 100 Years

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the northwestern coast of Cuba on June 8, 2026, marking the largest seismic event in the Gulf of Mexico since 1950. The tremor, centered approximately 65 miles west-northwest of Mantua, was felt across South Florida's cruise ports, the Caribbean, and parts of Mexico. Passengers aboard Margaritaville at Sea's Islander and Norwegian Escape reported significant shaking mid-voyage near the epicenter. Ships docked in PortMiami, Port Canaveral, and Port Tampa Bay also experienced the seismic activity. Despite the substantial magnitude, no significant damage to infrastructure or cruise vessels has been reported. Cruise operations continue normally across the affected region. The USGS confirmed the earthquake resulted from reverse faulting at a shallow 26-kilometer depth—the largest instrumentally recorded quake in the gulf since 1950.
