Galveston, Texas is the fourth-busiest cruise port in North America, and the only major cruise port on the Texas Gulf Coast. For the millions of people living in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and the broader Southwest, Galveston eliminates the need to fly to Florida or the West Coast to catch a cruise.
But Galveston is also a destination in its own right — a Gulf Coast island with historic architecture, solid seafood restaurants, beaches, and enough character to fill a day or two before or after your voyage.
This guide covers everything practical about cruising from Galveston: how to get there, where to park, where to stay, what to eat, and how to make embarkation day smooth and stress-free.

Getting to Galveston

Driving from Houston
Galveston sits at the southern tip of Galveston Island, about 50 miles southeast of downtown Houston.
Route: Take I-45 South from Houston all the way to Galveston. The highway ends on the island. Follow signs for the cruise terminal.
Drive time:
From downtown Houston: 55-70 minutes
From Houston suburbs (Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands): 70-90 minutes
From William P. Hobby Airport (HOU): 55-65 minutes
From George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH): 80-90 minutes
Traffic notes: I-45 South is a straight shot, but it can get congested on Friday afternoons and during holiday weekends. If your cruise departs on a Saturday (most do), morning traffic is typically light. Avoid the 4-6 PM Friday rush if driving down the night before.
Galveston Causeway: The bridge connecting the mainland to Galveston Island can slow down during peak travel. There are two bridges — the newer, wider bridge handles most traffic smoothly, but expect a slowdown during spring break and summer weekends.
Flying In
Two Houston airports serve Galveston-bound cruisers:
William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) — The better choice for Galveston. It's closer (45 miles vs 70 miles from IAH), cheaper for Uber/Lyft, and served by Southwest Airlines, JetBlue, and Delta. Most domestic flights use Hobby.
George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) — Larger airport with more international flights and United Airlines hub. Further from Galveston, but the only option for some connections.
Shuttle Services
If you don't want to rent a car or park at the port:
Galveston Limousine Service: $40-$50 per person shared shuttle from Hobby, $50-$60 from IAH. Private sedan: $120-$160. Reserve in advance.
Island Breeze Shuttle: $45-$55 per person from either airport. Operates on cruise-ship schedules.
Uber/Lyft: $45-$70 from Hobby, $60-$90 from IAH. The return trip (port to airport after disembarkation) is usually cheaper because Galveston surge pricing is lower than airport surge.
Driving from Other Texas Cities
City | Distance | Drive Time |
|---|---|---|
San Antonio | 240 miles | 3.5-4 hours |
Austin | 220 miles | 3.5-4 hours |
Dallas/Fort Worth | 300 miles | 4.5-5 hours |
Corpus Christi | 220 miles | 3.5-4 hours |
New Orleans | 350 miles | 5-5.5 hours |
For drives over 3 hours, arriving the night before is strongly recommended.
Parking at the Galveston Cruise Port
Official Port Parking

Mifaso Cruise-Approved Power Strip
- Cruise-approved (no surge protector) with multiple USB ports
- Compact design fits perfectly on the narrow cabin nightstand
Cruise cabins have limited outlets — this solves the charging problem without tripping ship safety rules
View on AmazonThe Galveston Wharves operate paved, open-air parking lots adjacent to the cruise terminals.
Rates (2026):
Terminal 1 and Terminal 2: $15-$18 per day
Terminal 3 (newer facility): $18-$22 per day
7-night cruise total: $105-$154
What to know:
Lots are paved, well-lit, and monitored by 24/7 security cameras
Open-air (no covered parking) — your car will bake in the Texas sun; use a windshield shade
Pay with credit card at the lot entrance; cash is sometimes not accepted
Keep your parking receipt — you'll need it to exit when you return
Lots fill up early on busy embarkation days; arrive before noon
Off-Site Parking
Private lots near the port offer lower rates with shuttle service to the terminal:
EZ Cruise Parking
Rate: $10-$13 per day
Free shuttle to/from the terminal (runs every 15-20 minutes)
Paved, fenced, and gated
Reserve online for a guaranteed spot
Galveston Park and Cruise
Rate: $8-$12 per day
Shuttle service included
Covered parking available for an extra $3-$5/day
Located along the cruise route on Harborside Drive
Tips for off-site parking:
Reserve in advance online — walk-up rates are higher
Allow an extra 20-30 minutes for the shuttle on embarkation day
Confirm shuttle hours for your disembarkation day (early morning shuttles start at 6-7 AM)
Airport Parking Alternative
If you're flying into Hobby and don't need a car, skip parking entirely. Take a shuttle service or Uber/Lyft both ways. The round-trip cost ($90-$140 per person) is often comparable to parking ($100-$150) plus gas, and you avoid the stress of driving.

View on AmazonGalveston has more going on than most cruise passengers realize. If you arrive the afternoon before your cruise or have time after disembarkation, here are the highlights:
The Strand Historic District
The heart of Galveston's history and charm. The Strand is a 5-block stretch of restored 19th-century commercial buildings filled with shops, galleries, restaurants, and bars. It's walkable, atmospheric, and the best way to spend an evening before your cruise.
Highlights:
Architecture — ornate Victorian-era iron-front buildings, many dating to the 1870s-1890s
La King's Confectionery — handmade saltwater taffy, fudge, and old-fashioned candy
Hendley Market — antiques, local art, and quirky gifts
Star Drug Store — Galveston's oldest pharmacy (1886), now a soda fountain and lunch counter
Moody Gardens
A complex of three glass pyramids housing an aquarium, a rainforest exhibit, and a discovery museum. The aquarium pyramid is the standout — one of the best in Texas, with penguins, sharks, and a Gulf of Mexico habitat. Plan 3-4 hours. Adult tickets: $35-$50 depending on how many pyramids you visit.
Pleasure Pier
A 1,130-foot amusement pier extending over the Gulf of Mexico with rides, carnival games, and food vendors. The Iron Shark roller coaster loops over the water. It's touristy, but kids love it, and the sunset views from the pier are genuinely beautiful. Rides: $5-$8 each or $30 unlimited wristband.
Galveston Beaches
The beach scene is modest compared to Florida or the Caribbean — the Gulf water is warm but murky (typical for the Texas coast). Stewart Beach and East Beach are the most popular public beaches. Beach parking: $12-$15 per vehicle. The beach is best for a relaxed afternoon walk rather than a snorkeling destination.
Bishop's Palace
A stunning Victorian mansion (1892) and National Historic Landmark. Guided tours take you through ornate rooms with stained glass, carved fireplaces, and period furnishings. One of the most impressive residential buildings in Texas. Tours: $14 adults, $10 children.
Galveston Railroad Museum
Located inside the old Santa Fe railroad depot, this museum features restored locomotives, passenger cars, and model train layouts. Good for train enthusiasts and families with younger kids. Admission: $14 adults, $9 children.

Port Terminal Logistics
Terminal Layout
Galveston has three cruise terminals:
Terminal 1: Older terminal, primarily used by Carnival's smaller ships
Terminal 2: Mid-size terminal, used by Carnival and Disney
Terminal 3: Newest terminal (opened 2022), built for Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships, modern check-in facilities, larger capacity
Embarkation Day Timeline
Time | Activity |
|---|---|
10:00-10:30 AM | Terminal opens for early check-in (if assigned early boarding) |
11:00 AM-12:00 PM | General check-in opens |
12:00-2:00 PM | Peak boarding time (longest lines) |
2:00-3:00 PM | Lighter crowds, faster boarding |
3:00-3:30 PM | Final boarding (do not arrive after this) |
4:00-5:00 PM | Ship departs |
Check-In Tips
Complete online check-in before arrival. Every cruise line requires pre-registration through their app or website. Upload passport photos, fill out health forms, and set up your onboard account. This cuts your terminal time from 45 minutes to 15 minutes.
Print your luggage tags at home. The cruise line provides downloadable luggage tags after check-in. Print them, attach them to your bags, and drop your luggage with the porters outside the terminal. Tip: $2-$3 per bag for the porters.
Carry essential items in a small bag. Your checked luggage may not arrive at your cabin until 4-6 PM. Keep medications, swimsuit, sunscreen, phone charger, and a change of clothes in a carry-on bag.
Arrive between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Early enough to enjoy the ship before the crowds, late enough to avoid the initial rush. If your cruise line offers assigned boarding times, follow your time slot.
Bring your passport (not just a copy). While technically a birth certificate and government ID are sufficient for closed-loop cruises (departing from and returning to a US port), a passport is strongly recommended. If you need to fly home from a foreign port due to a medical emergency or missed ship, you'll need a passport.
Disembarkation Morning
Ships typically dock in Galveston at 6:00-7:00 AM. Disembarkation begins around 7:30-8:00 AM and continues until 9:30-10:00 AM. Self-assist disembarkation (carrying your own luggage off the ship first) starts earliest. If you have an early flight or long drive, choose self-assist.
Post-cruise parking shuttle note: If you parked off-site, confirm your lot's shuttle pickup schedule for disembarkation morning. Most run every 15-20 minutes starting at 7:00 AM. The official port lots are walking distance from the terminal.
Money-Saving Tips for Galveston Cruisers
Fly into Hobby, not IAH. Hobby is 25 miles closer to Galveston, has cheaper rideshare fares, and is served by Southwest (no bag fees).
Park off-site. Savings of $5-$10 per day versus official port parking add up on a 7-night cruise ($35-$70 savings).
Stay at a hotel with free breakfast. La Quinta and Comfort Inn both include breakfast. Feeding a family of four at a restaurant before boarding costs $40-$80; free hotel breakfast covers the same need.
Eat dinner in the Strand, not on Seawall. Strand District restaurants are walking distance from the closest hotels and tend to be 10-20% cheaper than equivalent Seawall Boulevard spots.
Skip the pre-cruise beach day. Galveston beaches charge $12-$15 for parking and the water quality is mediocre. Save your beach time for the Caribbean ports on your itinerary.
Use the cruise line app to check in early. Earlier check-in times mean more time on the ship before departure — you can eat lunch included in your fare instead of buying it at the port.
The Bottom Line
Galveston is a no-frills, efficient cruise port that gets you from car to ship with minimal fuss. It doesn't have the glamour of Miami's port or the walkability of San Juan, but for the 30 million people living within a day's drive, it's the most convenient gateway to the Caribbean.
Arrive the night before. Park off-site to save money. Eat at the Strand for dinner and grab breakfast at your hotel. Check in online, show up at 11:00 AM, and you'll be at the pool with a drink in hand by noon.
